When I first got a temporary teaching position at Dalhousie University in Halifax it occurred to me that this was the chance of a lifetime to sail on the Atlantic. The gesture was partly symbolic too. I had purchased an old Mercedes car and, when I discovered that you could get a 25 year loan to buy a boat, I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to have a Mercedes and a yacht before I had a job!
