I am a Professor of International Affairs at Carleton University. I began my academic career studying international relations at Keele University and the London School of Economics in the UK, in both instances in a dedicated Department of International Relations. This has given me a distinct perspective on the subject, one that these days might be identified with the English School, that IR is a distinct discipline with interdisciplinary connections to various cognate subjects across the social sciences and humanities.
As doctoral student I studied J.A Hobson’s writings on international relations. I have maintained a research interest in the history of international theory, especially early 20th century liberal internationalism.
My other research focus is the European Union, European foreign and security policy, and transatlantic relations. I have been President of the European Community Studies Association of Canada and am currently associated with the Carleton University Centre for European Studies.
