Turning Points in History: Canadian History and its Sources

Overview:
A survey of Canadian history based on the analysis of written, visual and oral documents, and of objects and liandscapes. Each week, the techniques of interpretations of one type of document will provide the basis for the study of major themes.

Sessions include:
Natives' Knowledge and Maps; Slavery, Parish Registers, Genealogy and Censuses; Plitics and Portraits; the Opening of the West and Painting; Immigrations and letters; Social Control and Architecture; Social Reform and Photography; and Peacekeeping ad Government Papers.

Main readings:
The main readings will be articles, chapters and sources brought in class or on reserve at the library. There will be one textbook on the methods of historical research.

Evaluation:
Four small papers and one test each term, related to the workshops on sources conducted in class.
