WHAT IN THE WORLD...
...is going on?

The world is too much with us... --William Wordsworth

If Wordsworth thought the world was too much with us even in his day, what would he have thought of the Internet?

The world today is with us everywhere -- in our homes, our places of work, and our places of play. No one knows anymore where are the boundaries of community.

The Internet is making us all one.

Zine '98 is a glimpse of the topics that face us as a global community. It is a look by Carleton University students at some of the things that extend our boundaries, either in a serious or a playful way.

International sports, online journalism, advertising, the digital world itself, and the approaching millennium affect the entire planet. Here's how some some people in the Canadian part of that planet look at those issues:

Online Journalism: Online journalism is an exciting fusion of moving pictures, sound and interactivity. Our cyberjournalists report on the pros and cons of this new medium and what consumers can expect.

Advertising: More and more, society is being bombarded with advertising. Our reporters look at some of the latest trends, including Internet advertising and subliminal advertising.

The Digital Underground: From crime to pornography, subversive activity on the Internet is there for the asking. But how does it work? And how can it be stopped? Our reporters found out from the experts.

The Millennium: The countdown is on, and time is running out. Will the year 2000 be a giant party or a giant mess? Our reporters examine how the world is preparing for the millennium.

Conspiracy Theories: Trust no one because nothing is what it seems. Thanks to the Internet, theories about everything from Princess Di's death to alien abductions can be read globally.

International Sports: 1998 is the year that the world came to play. The Olympics, the World Cup of soccer, and the greatest international tournament in hockey history. . . our reporters look at the excitement, the hype, and the aftermath.

Sports and Politics: When it comes to sports, the real game often takes place off the field. Jobs for athletes, funding to the sports industry, and winning at all costs are major issues for today's international athletes.
