Intelligence: 9.5 1 of 1

9.5 Artificial Intelligence

Perhaps the best test of our understanding of intelligence is whether or not we can simulate intelligence using a computer program.

expert systems

  • a system that contains the knowledge of experts from a specific area in explicit form; MYCIN is an example of an expert system designed to provide medical diagnoses
  • pros: makes efficient use of scarce resources (i.e., experts!)
  • cons: expert systems are ‘brittle’, they do not learn new information unless reprogrammed; as a consequence they are not always easily adapted to novel situations
  • although expert systems embody the knowledge that experts possess, they lack certain fundamental human attributes

Turing test

Is there a way to determine if a computer program or any other device has sufficient intelligence to be indistinguishable from a human?
