Perhaps the best
test of our understanding of intelligence is
whether or not we can simulate intelligence using
a computer program.
expert systems
- a system that
contains the knowledge of experts from a
specific area in explicit form; MYCIN is an example of an
expert system designed to provide medical
diagnoses
- pros: makes
efficient use of scarce resources (i.e.,
experts!)
- cons: expert
systems are brittle, they do
not learn new information unless
reprogrammed; as a consequence they are
not always easily adapted to novel
situations
- although
expert systems embody the knowledge that
experts possess, they lack certain
fundamental human attributes
Turing test
Is there a way to
determine if a computer program or any other
device has sufficient intelligence to be
indistinguishable from a human?
