Welcome to the home page for History 3404.  Here you will find details regarding required readings, class requirements and assignments, as well as the class schedule.  There are also links to a variety of other sites of historical and contemporary significance regarding the period we will be studying.  I will be adding to these as we go along.  If you have any problems reaching any of the links, or if you have any suggestions for additions, please let me know.   The site will be up-dated frequently with such things as links to assigned readings, questions for reading assignments, and study guides for reviews.  If you are in the class, it is your responsibility to check this site regularly.

Course Description

This course will cover the period from the Great Depression and the United States' entry into World War II down to the recent past.  Broadly-speaking the main themes of the course will be the US's rise to global preeminence over the last half century, the transformation of American society and culture at home, and the relation between domestic developments and the US's expanding role in the wider world. 

Topics to be explored include: 

  • The Great Depression and the New Deal
  • American participation in World War II 
  • The Cold War and American involvement in Europe, Latin America, and Asia
  • Culture and consumerism in American life
  • Political and cultural protest, including the civil rights movement and feminism
  • The development of American (especially presidential) politics in this period

  • America's cultural impact on the rest of the world.
