MOOSONEE - MOOSE FACTORY

Moose Factory is situated on Factory Island, one of a cluster of several islands where the Moose Rvier widens before emptying into James Bay. Moosonee is on the mainland on the north shore of the Moose River. Looking out from Moosonee you see the western side of Charles Island (Tidewater Provincial Park); Shoal Island and Butler Island to the North. Looking out from the Eco Lodge on Factory Island, you can see Sawpit Island on the southern side of the canal, and Charles Island on the opposite side of the canal. From the Eco Lodge the sounds of young revellers in Tidewater Provincial Park are carried over the water. A manmade canal cut through Charles Island now shortens the boat trip to Moose Factory. Moose Factory and Moosonee each has a population of about 2,500. Front Road and Riverside Road on Factory Island look out over the south shore of the Moose River.
Moosonee has the airport, the terminus of the Polar Bear Express, the James Bay Education Centre, the Sakabaun Cafe and the Art ...

Moose Factory: On this small map which shows only the western tip of Factory Island, the area under federal jurisdiction, Hospital Drive points north. Bay Road points in the direction of Charles Island and Moosonee. The Eco Lodge and Marina on the opposite side of Factory Island, are situated at the junction of Bay Road and Hospital Drive. The hospital is situated at the corner of Hospital Drive and the road that leads to the public docks. The Mushkegowuk Council Office is on the corner of 1st Avenue (Horden Street) and Centre Road. St. Thomas Anglican Church is on Front Road. Front Road and Riverside Drive look out over Flats Island, one of the the preferred swimming areas. Because of strong currents swimming outside of certain safe areas, can be dangerous. Front Road extends along the river to become Riverside Drive where the Moose Cree Education Authority (the Monroe Linklater Memorial Building) is situated. The Thomas CheeChoo Jr. Memorial Complex is near the Linklater building. Both are on the First Nations reserve which covers 745 acres, most of the Island. The Nature Trail follows the shoreline along the outer perimeter of the First Nations.
