An Ocean of Knowledge: This dramatic and visually pleasing bathymap is part of an oceanographic CD-ROM produced as a joint project combining scientific data gathered during the Cold War (and after) from United States and Russia. These images illustrate the movement of oceanic waters under and around permanent ice mass. Their studies will inform research into the relationship between warm and cold currents and global warming. National Geographic article "An Arctic breakthrough" concludes with a comment by Danilov-Danilian who is encouraged that the instruments of war can be turned into the means of "environmental salvation": "For us in Russia today, this is one bright speck of paint on a very dark canvas." vol. 191. no.2 February 1997(57) |
