Plagiarism is considered a very serious offence at Carleton University.
It may take the form of copying the work of others without consent, or
simply cheating by various means on tests and exams. Students in CHEM 1000
are encouraged to read the information on academic offences contained here
in
the University Calendar.
For your information, I have caught students cheating in this course
in the past. Each one was bawled out by the Dean and given an F in the
course. Don't do it.
Some common cheating methods on tests and exams, which
we are very good at catching, have been:
- paper notes of all descriptions
- notes written onto clothing, arms, legs, etc
- notes written into programmable calculators
- notes written inside calculator covers (very popular, and always
discovered!)
- copying answers from test papers in front, beside, or even in back
of the cheater!
- various methods involving visits to the washrooms during a test
- various electronic methods (cell phones, Blackberries, etc.)
- bringing an altered test paper back for re-marking because the marker "missed something"
- etc.
We are good at what we do. It is easier for
you to study for the test than to get away with cheating. Don't do it.
