VSEPR Tutorial - Page 1
The goal of this tutorial is to teach you the rules for determining the shapes of simple molecules and ions using the VSEPR theory. Once you know the rules, you will get the shape right every time!
You may be interested to know that VSEPR theory was invented by a Canadian, Dr. R.J. Gillespie at McMaster University !
VSEPR stands for Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion. Think about each word here - we are concerned only with the valence electrons in the compound, these (usually) occur in pairs, and the pairs repel one another. These repulsions result in a distinctive geometry, or shape, of the compound.
