Newsgroup Access from Home

A few people have told me that they are unable to access the course newsgroup from home. If you are experiencing difficulty connecting to the course newsgroup from home, you many need to set some preferences in your browser.

First, note that only Netscape will access the newsgroups. Internet Explorer will open the course wbsite, but will not open newsgroups.

To configure the newsgroup reader in Netscape:

1. Select Edit on the Menu bar

2. Select Preferences

3. Click on the '+' sign in front of the item "Mail and Newsgroups". It will expand this item.

4. Select "Newsgroup Server".

5. Select "Add". Type "news-server.carleton.ca" (without the quotes) in the box. Click on 'OK'.

You should now be able to click on the newsgroup link in the course website to get to the CHAT newsgroups.

If the 01138 Newsgroup does not appear, you will have to subscribe to it. Click on File in the menu bar, and select Subscribe. Select the Search Tab in the window that now appears and search for 01138 (choose appropriate section as well).
