Dissertation: “Patronage, Loyalty, and Conversion in the Ancient Mediterranean.”
This work establishes an alternative model for understanding ancient conversion, especially Paul’s conversion, which takes into account the common “personality structures” in traditional Mediterranean cultures and the place of “religion” in the Graeco-Roman world. Where modern Western culture approaches conversion primarily as a psychological and internal experience, in the ancient Mediterranean world conversion was modeled on ancient patronage and clientage with its dynamic of loyalty.
