Education

2003           Ph.D. (Theology) University of St. Michael’s College

Dissertation: “Patronage, Loyalty, and Conversion in the Ancient Mediterranean.” This work establishes an alternative model for understanding ancient conversion, especially Paul’s conversion, which takes into account the common “personality structures” in traditional Mediterranean cultures and the place of “religion” in the Graeco-Roman world. Where modern Western culture approaches conversion primarily as a psychological and internal experience, in the ancient Mediterranean world conversion was modeled on ancient patronage and clientage with its dynamic of loyalty.

Specialization: New Testament (Comprehensives in Synoptic Gospels, Paul, Wisdom Literature, and Hellenism)

                   Supervisor: Dr. John S. Kloppenborg
The Centre for the Study of Religion, University of Toronto

1997           M.A. (Religious Studies) University of British Columbia

Thesis: “The Challenge of the Thessalonians and Paul’s Riposte.”
An analysis of how I Thessalonians would have functioned in an honour and shame culture. The very writing of this letter, in addition to several of Paul’s epistolary conventions, suggests that Paul was responding in a culturally appropriate way to a challenge from within the Thessalonian community.

Major Field: New Testament Studies

                   Supervisor: Dr. Dietmar Neufeld

1990           B.A. (Political Science) University of British Columbia
